Active

Since its launch in 2017, the School Feeding Programme has grown into one of the largest education and nutrition initiatives in Tigray. Implemented in partnership with Mary's Meals International and local stakeholders, the programme provides nutritious daily meals to schoolchildren, helping them stay healthy, attend school regularly, and achieve better learning outcomes.

By addressing hunger and food insecurity, the programme serves as a vital safety net for vulnerable children and families while promoting access to education and child wellbeing.

What We Do

The programme provides nutritious daily meals to primary school children across multiple districts in Tigray. In addition to food provision, the initiative is supported by strong community engagement, with parents, schools, and local communities actively contributing to meal preparation and programme implementation.

Results

The School Feeding Programme has contributed to:

  • Increased school enrollment and attendance.
  • Reduced absenteeism and school dropout rates.
  • Improved concentration, participation, and academic performance.
  • Better nutrition, health, and wellbeing among children.
  • Increased classroom engagement and social interaction.
  • Reduced economic pressure on vulnerable families.
  • Stronger community ownership and support for education.

By combining nutrition and education, the School Feeding Programme helps children learn, grow, and build a brighter future while strengthening the resilience of families and communities across Tigray.
